Fireworks seized in joint operation

This week a large quantity of fireworks were seized from a domestic premises in Hylton Castle in Sunderland following a joint operation between Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, Northumbria Police and Sunderland Trading Standards.

Ian Bell Head of Fire Safety at Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: “These fireworks, which were being sold via social media, without a licence and without suitable storage are the type and quantity usually found in a licensed shop.

“Some of these fireworks were also the types usually used in professional displays with a higher explosive content than usually found. We have looked to ensure the safety of the general public by seizing these fireworks and removing from circulation.

“Remember you should only purchase fireworks from a licenced supplier and if in any doubt you should contact Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service via our website at www.twfire.gov.uk.”
