Gateshead

In Gateshead, we work with local partner agencies to educate people on how to prevent fire and where necessary, safely react to an emergency.

The area varies from relatively affluent residential to medium industrial use. It also includes attractions such as the Baltic Arts Centre, the Sage and the Metro Centre.

As well as responding to emergencies, operational firefighters carry out other vital tasks to reduce the risk to the Gateshead community. Delivering home safety checks are key to preventing loss of life and damage to property.

To arrange a home safety check in Gateshead, use the online request form or call your nearest fire station.

Fire stations

Birtley

Birtley Community Fire Station is located on the southern border of the Gateshead Council area. It serves parts of the Team Valley estate and large areas of rural land, as well as areas of Washington, part of the City of Sunderland Council area.

It includes a 16 seat meeting room that is available for hire.

Birtley was the first Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service station to move to Day Crewing Close Call (DCCC) staffing. This means that the crews have 24 hour shift periods instead of alternating between day and night shifts.

DCCC crews have purpose-built accommodation and remain at the station to respond to emergencies throughout their whole shift.
