Our Station

Located on Dryden Road in Gateshead, Gateshead Community Fire Station covers several Council Wards; Bridges, Low Fell, High Fell, Saltwell, Deckham and has partial coverage of: Dunston and Teams, Lamesley, Chowdene, Windy Nook and Whitehills, Lobley Hill and Bensham.

In addition to responding to emergencies, staff at the Station undertake a range of Community Safety (CS) activities that are primarily aimed at preventing fires, as well as deaths and injuries in fires.

Gateshead station is home to a Category 1 and a Category 2 appliance as well as an aerial ladder platform and an operational support unit.

The Station includes a CS office and there is Young Fire-fighters Association (YFA) which meets weekly.

The Station includes a 70 seat auditorium which has modern IT presentation systems plus a 20 seat meeting room, both of which are available to serving-the-community organisations free of charge. These rooms are also available to commercial customers at a competitive charge.

The Area

The geographical area served by the station, varies greatly from relatively affluent residential to light and heavy industrial use. It also includes developments in central Gateshead such as Trinity Square and on  Gateshead Quays such as the Baltic Arts Centre, the Sage and Gateshead College.  The area also encompasses a comparatively newly built complex of large hotels.  

The population of Gateshead as a whole based on the 2011 Census, is 200,200 persons who are predominantly from Anglo-Saxon background with a relatively small ethnic group.

There are 89,154 dwellings within the Gateshead area with approximately: - 

  • 58.2% Owner Occupied
  • 22.4% Local Authority Rented
  • 2.5%  Privately Rented
  • 5.6%  Housing Association Rented

The demographic layout within the Gateshead Council area is changing with the redevelopment of areas such as Beacon Lough, the Sunderland Road area and the Old Fold. Additionally, former ‘brown field’ sites such as Teams, Gateshead Festival site and Dunston Staithes are presently being developed for residential purposes.

Home Risk Assessment
Home Safety Check

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service is committed to achieving it's Vision of 'Creating the Safest Community' by reducing the risk of fire in domestic premises through Home Safety Checks.  

Firefighters can visit your home, where you may be at the greatest risk from fire, and offer advice on Fire Safety, tailored specifically to your needs and where necessary fit free smoke detectors.

We are currently targeting our resources at those households most at risk, but will attend to you as soon as possible if you request this service.
