Our Station

Chopwell Community Fire Station is located on Derwent Street, Chopwell on the western extreme of the Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council area. It covers Chopwell and Rowlands Gill Council Wards.

The Station has one fire appliance and is staffed by 12 part-time firefighters. They operate a rota system of call to duty by pager from the immediate area to respond to emergencies. The time spent on duty at the station – mostly in the evening - is mainly devoted to training and ensuring that their equipment is serviceable.

Community Safety activity in Chopwell’s area is carried out by Community Safety (CS) staff and  full-time fire-fighters from Swalwell CFS.

The station is also co-located with Northumbria Police.

The Area

The geographical area served by Chopwell Community Fire Station consists of the former mining village of Chopwell and part of the neighbouring village of High Spen. The area is of primarily rural and some agricultural land. There are also large areas of forestry.  

The population of Gateshead as a whole based on the 2011 Census, is 200,200 persons who are predominantly from Anglo-Saxon background with a relatively small ethnic group.

There are 89,154 dwellings within the Gateshead area with approximately: - 

  • 58.2% Owner Occupied
  • 22.4% Local Authority Rented
  • 2.5%  Privately Rented
  • 5.6%  Housing Association Rented

Home Risk Assessment
Home Safety Check

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service is committed to achieving it's Vision of 'Creating the Safest Community' by reducing the risk of fire in domestic premises through Home Safety Checks.  

Firefighters can visit your home, where you may be at the greatest risk from fire, and offer advice on Fire Safety, tailored specifically to your needs and where necessary fit free smoke detectors.

We are currently targeting our resources at those households most at risk, but will attend to you as soon as possible if you request this service.
