This week (Tuesday 2nd September) a hero council worker received a special CFO Commendation award at TWFRS Service Headquarters in Washington. James Kilpatrick, works as a Joiner for Newcastle City Council and his selfless brave actions made earlier in the year have been recognised by Chief Fire Officer, Peter Heath.

James Kilpatrick of Newcastle City Council is receiving his award from Chief Fire Officer Peter Heath outside of Service Headquarters in Washington.

In March, whilst driving on the way to work, James witnessed first-hand a house fire in the Silver Lonnen area of Newcastle.  His swift and astute actions helped to save the lives of a father and son who were calling out for help from a first-floor property prior to the arrival of the fire and rescue service.

“I would have to say I was in the right place at the right time and happened to have a set of ladders in my van.  I was pleased that I could help out the two people,” said James.

James, who has worked for the City Council for over twenty years, recognised the urgency of the situation and was able to use the ladders to rescue the father and son from the burning building.

James talks about receiving the commendation from CFO Heath. He said: “I was really proud to receive the certificate from the fire and rescue service. It really means a lot to myself and my family.

“It was lovely to meet everyone – they were all really nice!”

Chief Fire Officer Peter Heath, said of James’ achievements: “It was an honour to present James with the special CFO Commendation on behalf of myself, the service and the Fire Authority. “These rare awards are handed out to individuals who we recognise as having made an amazing contribution to the local community here in Tyne and Wear.  Two people are able to be with their family right now due to James’ quick-thinking and brave actions. Well-done from everyone at TWFRS!”
