When it comes to fire safety, prevention is definitely better than cure.
The number of people dying or being injured from fires is reducing, but any deaths or injuries are too many.
A hard-hitting advertising campaign to raise awareness about the work that Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service carries out to prevent fires hits ITV screens on Monday, 6 August for six weeks.
The advert shows a firefighter carrying out a home fire risk assessment, with the voiceover: “The more of this we do….” then cuts to a dramatic short of a firefighter rescuing a girl from a burning house continuing: “…the less of this we do.”
Last year alone, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service put out over 14,000 fires but it prevented a lot more through a range of initiatives including free home fire safety checks and working with schools, local authorities, the police and other partners on fire prevention and education schemes.
Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service pioneered many community safety initiatives to prevent fires from happening e.g. Young Firefighters Association, Firesetters, SMARTrisk, Phoenix Project, Fostering Network, which are now copied right across the UK.
Today’s firefighter does much more than put out fires; they carry out a wide range of prevention work too. At least 1,000 free home safety checks are carried out per fire station. In 2006 this resulted in 58% of fires we were called to having being alerted by a smoke alarm – in 1995 this was only 4%, beating all the other metropolitan fire and rescue services.
