I first began working within the Fire Service Media Resources Unit in 1997 on a temporary contract following a work experience programme as part of my degree in Photography. When the post became vacant, I applied, got the job and haven’t looked back.
My role focuses on press and PR, producing training footage and school visits. I also attend incidents where evidence is required for use in court cases. I participate in large scale campaigns such as Make Byker Safer and Bonfire Campaigns, this allows me to work as part of a team to achieve a common goal. I enjoy my role due to the variety is offers me; everyday is different and no two jobs are the same.
With a keen interest in sport, the Service supports me and I have had the opportunity to compete at local, national and international sporting events. Whilst competing in swimming and triathlons’ over the last 12 years I have became national champion and one of my greatest achievements was to be awarded the UK Fire Service Sports Personality of the Year. Since my achievements I have been approached by the UK Fire Service Sports and Athletics Association as public relations officer.
There aren’t many organisations that would support my hobbies and allow me to do what I love. There are great opportunities to progress and further my career, it’s definitely a job for life working with a great team of people.
