Should you be successfully appointed to a trainee course, you will join many of your fellow recruits in what can be the most challenging and rewarding 14 weeks of your life.
The course is led by a team of dedicated instructors at the Barmston Training Centre, a purpose built facility combined with the Service Headquarters (pictured above). The centre consists of a breathing apparatus training centre, 2 hot fire structures and external training simulations.
Elements of the Course
Each day you will begin with a physical training session, this ensures that your fitness is maintained throughout the course and beyond.
The course is not solely practical and if successful you attend around 60 lectures, digesting a huge amount of information that you will be tested weekly throughout the course. Some of the areas include:

You will undergo scenario training in the following areas:
Continuous Assessment
Your development doesn’t stop after you leave the course, you will work to achieve your competency in the role through an NVQ. You will also return to the training centre to undergo assessments at the following intervals (9 months / 12 months / 17 months / 24 months), this will look at the information you have retained and the practical skills you learned initially.
