The purpose of this interview is to assess your experience in relation to five of the Firefighter PQA’s.
This is where we get to talk face to face and find out more about your qualities and experiences. The interview will last for one hour and be run using a panel of 2 Fire Service personnel. You will be asked questions relating to your knowledge, skills and attributes to determine your suitability for the role.
The Interview practice booklets provides information on the nature of the interview and allows you to familiarise yourself with the types of questions that will be asked.
Tips
Before the interview…

Set aside some time and read the practice booklet prior to your interview

Make sure you confirm the time, date and location of the interview and try to arrive early

If you are unable to make the interview, contact the recruitment department as soon as possible

Use your application form to think of potential questions and the responses you might give

Ensure you read your letter thoroughly and bring with you the required identification.
During the interview…

Try to relax, it’s understandable that you may be nervous and the interviewers will understand

Ensure you speak clearly and slowly, this means the interviewers will be able to note everything you say

It’s ok to take a few moments before answering a question

Don’t be afraid to ask for the question to be repeated, you want to make sure your response is relevant
Try to use STARE effect, this will help structure your responses:
S – Describe the situation to set the scene for your answer
T – What task were you given?
A – What action(s) did you take to complete the task?
R – What was the result from your actions?
E – When evaluating, what could you have done differently?
Selection Process
Candidates successful at interview and offered a place on a trainee course, will be asked to attend a medical assessment then, if successful, a Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check will be processed. Your appointment is subject to the results of these tests.
