Polices and Procedures on the Employment of Staff

  • Discipline Procedure and Guidance - This procedure which reflects the ACAS Code on Disciplinary and Grievance Procedures and improves on the statutory provisions is designed to help and encourage all employees up to and including Area Managers, to achieve and maintain standards of conduct, attendance and job performance. The aim is to ensure consistent and fair treatment for all employees in the organisation.

  • Grievance Procedure - The purpose of this procedure is to establish arrangements under which individual employees can raise grievances that have not been resolved through the normal processes and have them settled fairly and promptly.

Where either the Authority or the recognised trade union determine that the matter is
of a collective issue, it may, at any stage, be transferred to stage one of the agreed
local negotiation procedure.  The aim of the procedure is to settle grievances as near as
possible to the point of origin.

Managers must treat grievances seriously and expeditiously, and employees should
fully co-operate in the application of the procedure.

  • Health and Safety - The Fire Authority recognises its duties under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974, and the Regulations made under it. It is the aim of the Fire Authority to conduct its business efficiently whilst protecting the Health, Safety and Welfare of its employees and of any other persons affected by its operations. The Tyne and Wear Fire Authority and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service undertakes to operate a work environment which, so far as is reasonably practicable, is healthy and safe.
