Hadrian's Hike 2015

Hadrian's Hike 2015

This year’s event saw a field consisting of 12 Long distance walkers taking on the 21 mile route and 43 short distance walkers tackling the 12 mile route.

Both routes were to start and finish at the Twice Brewed Inn, with all competitors heading East towards Housesteads Roman Fort climbing Steel Rigg on the way, then crossing over the “Wall” to head North along the Pennine Way toward checkpoints 1 (Stonefolds) and checkpoint 2 (Edges Green), from which the short route would then turn South and climb back onto the “Wall” at Shield On the Wall before heading East again back to the Twice Brewed Inn. The Long route was to carry on West from Edges Green to checkpoint 3 (Thirlwell Castle) passing via Benks Hills, Hangingshields Rigg, High Old Shields and Low Old Shields on the way. Once there they would continue East to checkpoint 4 (Cawfields) and then carry on following the “Wall” to the end of the route.

Having had a week of hot sunny days followed by heavy thunder storm nights we weren’t quite sure what the weather on the day would bring. Early forecasts had predicted rain until mid-morning to be followed by a warm sunny afternoon.

After a night of heavy rain, at 0700 hours on the Saturday morning the event set-up team left West Denton Community Fire Station, the sky was dark and overcast and a few miles along the Military Road, the rain started to come down. By the time the set-up team reached the Twice Brewed Inn not only was there a deluge of rain but a low level mist was sitting well below the level of the “Wall”.
