Fire and rescue service offers a helping hand to young people

Date07 January 2010

Young people aged 16 to 25, who are unemployed and living in the Sunderland and South Shields area, could learn new skills to help them get a job by signing up to a training course run by Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.

The Prince's Trust Team course gives young people the opportunity to meet other people, try out new skills, get a taste of the workplace and plan for the future - all in a specifically designed 12-week programme, commencing on 25 January 2010.

If you are aged 16 to 25 and unemployed and would like to find out more, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service is holding two open days on Tuesday, 12 January at Sunderland East Community Fire Station, Railway Row, Sunderland and Thursday, 14 January at South Tyneside East Community Fire Station, John Reid Road, South Shields, from 10am - 3pm.  People can drop in and chat to a member of the team about what the course involves and how it could help. Youth workers and organisations which work with young people are also being encouraged to go along to find out more.

Prince's Trust Assistant Team Leader Alan D'Arcy, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, explains the benefits of the course: "With the economic climate having been gloomy for so long, it's great to be able to give young people something to look forward to and a chance to get some training and improve their prospects.  The course gives them the opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills and plan for the future. Lots of people who do the course go on to get jobs in many different organisations - a couple of our previous course participants now work for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, one has recently got a job in a local care home and another participant has signed up for a college course thanks to the confidence they gained on this course."

"Working with young people to offer them the chance to gain new skills that can help them get a job is an important part of our work with the local community," continues Alan.  "Sometimes the perpetrators of anti-social behaviour, like wheelie bin fires or car fires, are young people who are bored with nothing to do. Through this course we want to help young people and point them in the direction of a fulfilling future."

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service has been running Prince's Trust Team courses in Tyne and Wear for the past nine years. The 12-week course includes a team-building residential session, fire safety activities, a community fundraising project, a work placement, CV writing skills and interview technique training and a team challenge involving helping others in the local community.
