Targets

 

Our targets for this year across Tyne and Wear are:

 

 

  • To reduce deliberate vehicle fires by 5.6%

 

 

  • To reduce deliberate property fires by 4.5%

 

  • To reduce anti-social behaviour fires by 2.3%

 

Government targets use 2001-2 as a baseline year and are:

 

  • reduce by 10% the number of deliberate fires by 31st March 2010;

 

(These Government targets apply to deliberate fires in property and vehicles)

Statistics

 

Arson remains a major fire threat in England and Wales with an overall estimated cost to the economy of £2.53 billion per annum. In the last decade there have been about 2.3 million deliberate fires resulting in 25,000 injuries and over 900 deaths.

 

On an average week in England its communities suffer:

  • Over 1,600 property and vehicle fires
  • 50 injuries
  • 2 deaths
  • A cost to society of over £45 million
