Boarding Up Buildings

Derelict buildings are a huge fire hazard, if left unsecured. They are an attraction for anti-social behaviour, which can range from graffiti and vandalism to fire setting.

We work with the local authorities to get such 'at-risk' buildings secured.

This method of 'target-hardening' has proved to be an effective way of reducing the number of fire calls to the Fire and Rescue Service to such properties.

An initiative launched in Newcastle to make boarding up more appealing for both the local residents and potential new residents was 'decorative boarding'. This works on the premise:

1) The premises appear to be lived in thus reducing the risk of opportunity fires.
2) Improves the overall look of the area encouraging new tenants to move in.

The artistic work on the boards was carried in co-operation between a local artist and the local youths who may have previously been involved in anti-social behaviour. Thus, they are able to give something back to the local community.
