Once the clocks change and we have lighter nights we see an increase in deliberate fires.

Deliberate – or anti social behaviour (ASB) - fires account for more than three quarters of all fire calls we attend. We attend more ASB fires in April than we do in November - which includes the Bonfire period.

ASB fires cause damage to property, the environment and tie up firefighters unnecessarily. They can also cause injuries and deaths.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service works closely with each of the five local authorities to carry out clean ups to get rid of any rubbish and fly tipping. We also visit schools to warn children of the consequences of setting fires.

If you see any fly tipping or large build up of rubbish please report it to your local Council:

  • Gateshead Council -  0191 4337000
  • South Tyneside Council  - 0191 4277000
  • Newcastle Envirocall - 0191 2787878
  • North Tyneside Envirolink - 0345 2000103
  • Sunderland City and Neighbourhoods Team - 0191 5205550
