Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service wishes you a happy, successful and above all safe journey on you quest for knowledge whilst at your chosen University.  To this end we ask you to read and remember the following University fire safety information.  

If the alarm sounds you must evacuate the building  

Do not re- enter the building until you are told it is safe to do so

Many calls for the fire service to the Halls of residence are preventable. We cannot be in two places at once. There have been occasions when we are required at life threatening incidents

The most common causes of False alarms are:

Fumes or steam from cooking at University

There are heat detectors in the kitchen area and smoke detectors in the corridor. If you wedge the door open, the smoke detector will sense the fumes /steam and will sound the alarm. Never leave pans unattended on the cooker.

University Fire Safety - Don't leave lit cigarettes unnatended!

Smoking in University Accommodation

There are smoke detectors in the bedrooms and corridors which will sense tobacco smoke and sound the alarm.  

Never smoke in bed! 

They will also be set off by : 

  • Aerosol Sprays

  • Steam from the showers
  • Joss Sticks
  • Candles

Other University Safety AdviceKeep Escape routes clear they are there to allow you to escape in case of fire.

  • Never overload electrical sockets and ensure the correctly rated fuse is used in all appliances.

  • Do not wedge any fire doors open – kitchen, lounges, bedrooms or corridors.

  • The Halls are fitted with Fire Detection Equipment

Do not abuse the following University Fire Safety equipment

  • Fire Alarm ( break glass points & smoke detectors )
  • Fire Fighting equipment (extinguishers & fire blankets)
  • Self closing doors (bedrooms & kitchens )

 

Malicious actuation of any fire alarm WILL result in prosecution. The law states that any person who knowingly calls the Fire service with the knowledge that no fire is present shall be liable to a fine up to £2,500 and / or a term of imprisonment.
